CLAW Autumn Meeting and AGM 2008
The 2008 CLAW Autumn Meeting and AGM was hosted by Ceredigion County Council on the 6th and 7th November in Aberystwyth. Jane Davidson – Wales Assembly Government Minister for the Environment, Sustainability and Housing – was the guest speaker at the Annual Dinner where she expressed her support for the initiatives in property management being promoted by CLAW. In particular she was pleased to see the work CLAW was doing to promote excellence in public building design through the Building of the Year Award and reduction in carbon emissions through the Sustainabilty Award.
Following her address the Minister announced and presented the CLAW Awards for 2008. Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council’s “The Quays” project (New Offices and Service Response Centre) won the 2008 Building of the Year Award. The judges considered this scheme to be of a very high standard incorporating the best of sustainable design criteria.

Commendations were awarded to Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council’s “Metropole Cultural and Conference Centre”, Torfaen County Borough Council’s “Blaenavon World Heritage Centre” and Denbighshire County Council’s “Nant Clwyd Y Dre” refurbishment and restoration schemes. These excellent schemes demonstrated sensitive and sympathetic designs that enabled important historic buildings to contribute to future activities in the community

Torfaen County Borough Council’s “Eco Building” won the 2008 Sustainability Award. The judges were impressed with the innovative elements of the design and the opportunity for future projects to learn from the sustainable design aspects. In particular environmental performance was achieved through a holistic approach with good architectural design and efficient mechanical service installations.
